Activist Group Asserts to Have Scraped Countless of Audio Files from the Streaming Giant

An activist organization has stated to have harvested millions of songs from Spotify and is preparing to release them online.

Potential Boost for Artificial Intelligence Training

Observers said the apparent leak could aid artificial intelligence firms looking for data to develop their technology.

A group called Anna’s Archive said it had scraped 86 million music files from the platform and 256 million entries of associated data such as performer and album names. The company, which carries more than 100 million songs, stated that the leak did not represent its entire catalog.

“We have located and disabled the malicious user accounts that were involved in unlawful scraping,” stated a company spokesperson.

The Swedish service, which has more than 700 million users worldwide, added that an investigation into unauthorized access found a external actor collected public metadata and used questionable methods to circumvent DRM protections.

Group's Stated Mission and Concerns

Spotify does not think the music acquired by Anna’s Archive has been made public yet. Anna’s Archive, which is known for offering links to copyright-infringing books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘preservation archive’ for music.

They asserted the audio files represented 99.6% of all music streamed to by its listeners and would be distributed via ‘peer-to-peer networks’, a method of sharing large data files online.

“Of course Spotify doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a fantastic start,” said Anna’s Archive, which frames its mission as “safeguarding humanity’s information and heritage”.

AI Training and Copyright Debate

Ed Newton-Rex for protecting artists’ copyright, said the breached music would probably be used for training AI models.

“Educating models on pirated material is sadly widespread in the tech sector, so this accessed music is almost certain to end up training AI models,” he stated.

The Anna’s Archive site alludes to LibGen, a huge online repository of pirated books that has allegedly been leveraged by Meta to develop its systems.

A founder of an AI startup wrote on the professional network that members of the public could in theory “create their own private free equivalent of the service”. He added it could also allow technology firms to “train on contemporary music at scale”.

Intellectual property law has emerged as a battleground between creatives, authors and content creators on one side and tech giants on the other.

Government Considerations and Responses

In the UK, artists and writers have protested against a government proposal to let AI companies utilize protected work without permission unless the rights holder signals. Almost every respondent to a government consultation on the proposal has supported artists’ concerns.

A government minister for technology, research and technology informed parliament this month there was “little consensus” on the matter, adding that ministers would “take the time to get this correct”. The administration has pledged to make policy proposals on AI and copyright by March 2025.
