Members of an Italian clan of thieves who took over £1.2 million worth of items, among them from ex- Newcastle United striker Isak, have been ordered to pay back only £1 per person.

Siblings Valentino and Giacomo Nikolov, their sister Jela Jovanovic and her son Charlie Jovanovic travelled to the north-east of the UK to burgle multiple homes in April 2024.

The foursome were jailed for between six and 10 years in May 2025.

At a proceeds of crime hearing at Newcastle Crown Court, Jela Jovanovic and the Nikolov brothers were ordered to pay back £1 each while Charlie Jovanovic must hand over £1,135.

Details of the Burglaries

The court was told the group arrived by ferry in the United Kingdom on March 27, 2024 and employed a campervan as their "base of operations", which they parked at a service area and Durham service stations while using another car to search for properties and carry out thefts.

On 31 March they stole over £1m of goods including high-end fashion, purses, jewelry and a honor from a house on Clayton Road in Jesmond, Newcastle, while the residents were on holiday.

The next evening, the gang entered a home on a gated cul-de-sac in Whitburn, South Tyneside, and took luxury bags, jewellery and footwear worth more than one hundred thousand pounds.

After scouting out Newcastle United's training ground for two days, they then acted at the home of Swedish striker Alexander Isak in Darras Hall on 4 April, taking £10,000 in money, £68,000 worth of jewelry and the striker's £120,000 Audi RS6.

The group, who were described by prosecutors as experienced itinerant thieves, used gloves and face coverings, turned their phones off as they neared their targets and strapped a number plate, which had been taken from a auto shop in Chester-le-Street, on to their car with elastic bands.

They were apprehended in the Birmingham area on April 13.

Legal Proceedings and Sentencing

Valentino Nikolov had denied conspiracy to burglary but was found guilty by the court, while his three relations had all entered admissions to the identical accusation.

At the criminal gains session, lawyer the prosecution said every one of the burglars had profited from their crimes to the amount of over £1.2 million, which was based on what the affected parties said they had had stolen.

But Charlie Jovanovic was the only one deemed to have any money that could be "recovered", namely £1,135.50 which had previously been confiscated by authorities, the court heard, with 14 days to be spent in prison if he defaulted.

The other three had no money or property so were ordered to pay a nominal fee of £1 per person, with one week in incarceration the consequence if the sum was not paid.

The judge Spragg said if they were found with property in the coming years, "such as driving around in Italy in a sports car or owning a property", the prosecution could initiate further action to "recover the sum outstanding".
