Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Claims Unilever Halted Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
The original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate blocked the launch of a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, who established the business with his partner, announced how he plans to independently develop the controversial product within an individual series showcasing issues the company has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Dispute Involving Founders and Parent Company
This latest announcement intensifies the ongoing tension between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with Unilever, the British consumer goods giant which has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders maintain that the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked their company against "honouring its social mission".
Watermelon Flavor becoming an Emblem for Support
Mr. Cohen stated through an Instagram video how he's developing an innovative watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for naming options and potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem of solidarity with the Palestinian people due to its coloration, that mirror those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in territories under Israeli control, resulting in the parent company selling their Israel business over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales within the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand that was first created several years back to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts and Upcoming Plans
The founder indicated how he plans to develop other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that the company was prevented from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
This development follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company in September, following many years with the organization, citing worries regarding how its independence had been undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
“My conscience compels me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that it can achieve its ethical purpose, the principles which it was founded on and has maintained for decades," he explained to media outlets.
