Both Deceased Students Named in the Providence Campus Shooting as Law Enforcement Continue Hunt for Perpetrator.
Both young individuals who lost their lives in Saturday’s tragic incident on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their assailant carried on following the freeing by Rhode Island officials of the sole person questioned in the case.
Remembering Ella Cook
The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, per the Advent Cathedral in Birmingham, which offered condolences for her at a ceremony on Sunday.
Cook was the vice-presidency of Brown’s division of the College Republicans organization, according to the organization. Karoline Leavitt also expressed condolences publicly, stating: “There are no words. Thinking of her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”
The Second Victim
The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his initial year at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.
The victim's identification was verified by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“He was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He harbored grand aspirations of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and assisting patients,” his sibling Samira said in a online post.
Details of the Attack
Nine other people were injured in the weekend shooting in the engineering department of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Officials stated on Sunday evening that a 24-year-man arrested in a raid at a Hampton Inn about 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was released from custody.
“There is a killer at large,” declared Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.
He continued, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you have to regroup and head another way, and that is the current situation over the last 24 hours or so.”
Public Fear
Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, noted: “It is expected to provoke renewed concern for our city”.
The shooter discharged a weapon inside a classroom in the building on over the weekend, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9mm handgun, a police source informed the Associated Press.
Law enforcement that raided the inn recovered two handguns and two loaded 30-round magazines when the suspect was taken into custody, the news agency reported.
The Wounded Victims
Among those wounded, one student was allowed to go home, mentioned Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in serious yet stable state, and one remained in critical care, authorities stated on Sunday.

The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the student's death in a statement. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to Mr Umurzokov’s family, friends, and schoolmates and mourn the loss of his potential.”
