International Committee of the Red Cross Assists Militant Group in Recovery for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated that its personnel joined Hamas officials into zones of Gaza still under IDF authority to support the search for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Truce Terms and Hostage Remains Return

As part of the US-brokered ceasefire, which took effect on 10 October, Hamas is required to return the bodies of all captives as soon as possible. In exchange, Israel has consented to hand over the remains of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli.

Hamas has to date handed back the bodies of fifteen of those held captive but zero in the last five days, as some of those bodies are thought to be in locations beyond the yellow line designating the temporary truce line.

ICRC Role as Impartial Facilitator

“Upon the appeal of the involved sides, the Red Cross joined a participant in the hostilities as the party searched for the bodies of the deceased individuals past the IDF-designated ‘yellow boundary’,” said a spokesperson for the organization.

The spokesperson continued: “Those involved to the hostilities established the procedures of the operation and entrusted the Red Cross to act as a impartial mediator. The ICRC was had no part in the discussions.”

The official further clarified: “The ICRC was not involved in the physical hunt for the bodies nor does it take part in the physical recovery of remains.”

American Demand and Local Recovery Operations

Recently, the US president delivered a 48-hour ultimatum to the organization. “They is going to have to begin handing over the remains of the hostages who died, which include American citizens, promptly, or the additional nations involved in this great peace will take action,” he wrote on his social‑media platform.

When the 48-hour deadline approached, Hamas, accompanied by the Red Cross, joined Egyptian teams, who were authorised by Israel to look for bodies beyond the line marking the Israeli military’s pullback inside Gaza. An Israeli spokesperson said the Egyptian team would use heavy machinery and vehicles in the operation.

Authoritative Verification and Press Reports

The news was corroborated by an unnamed Israeli official, who told local press that members of the group had been allowed to enter sections of the region under military authority to search for the remains of hostages, together with Egypt’s and Red Cross personnel.

“To achieve this goal, representatives were allowed to cross the yellow line,” the official was quoted as stating.

Video released by a media outlet seemed to show members of a specialized group – part of the organization’s military wing tasked with holding hostages – accompanying a humanitarian transport in a specific location near Rafah, which is beyond IDF jurisdiction.

Difficulties in Locating Captive Bodies

The search for the remains of individuals taken captive has turned into one of the most delicate matters in the truce agreed between the two sides. Yet, the effort to find the bodies has proved difficult from the beginning, given the existence of an approximate enormous amount of debris across the strip, where, according to health officials, at least ten thousand residents are recorded as unaccounted for, buried under the rubble.

Diverging Claims on Body Location

Hamas has stated it lacks information on the precise locations of all the remains, saying it has been unable to communicate with a number of its units that had been detaining the hostages and were allegedly killed during military strikes.

However, an Israeli government spokesperson asserted that Hamas knew the whereabouts of the bodies. “Should the group made more of an effort, they would be able to recover the remains of our hostages,” the spokesperson said.
