Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where his condition is described as critical but stable.

“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he felt really upbeat. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”

New York police released surveillance images earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning near MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn said Boyd has been in his thoughts “constantly” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.

“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder injury that needed an operation.

He joined the Jets as a free agent in March and was projected as a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during preseason drills on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
