Kyiv Strikes Russian Oil Refinery With UK-supplied Storm Shadow Missiles.
In a significant escalation, Ukrainian forces have employed British-made Storm Shadow missiles to strike a key Russian oil refinery. The attack occurred on Thursday, according to the Ukrainian military authorities.
Attack Particulars and Military Significance
The plant in question, the Novoshakhtinsk oil plant, was said to be hit, with multiple blasts recorded at the location. This represents not the first instance where Ukraine has deployed these advanced British-supplied missiles to hit targets on Russian territory.
Military spokespersons emphasized that the Novoshakhtinsk plant serves as one of the primary suppliers of fuel products in Russia's south and is directly involved in supplying the armed forces of the Russian Federation.
Diplomatic Developments on the Conflict
Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Thursday that he held productive talks with envoys of ex-President Donald Trump, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. These talks focused on potential pathways to bring the conflict to a close.
“We had a really good conversation: numerous specifics, constructive proposals, that we discussed,” Zelenskyy stated on a messaging platform. “We explored some new ideas on how to bring a genuine peace closer, and it involves formats, meetings, and, certainly, the schedule.”
Legal Crackdown Inside the Country
In a parallel domestic matter, a court in Russia has found guilty a pro-war activist and critic of Vladimir Putin on charges of supporting terrorist activities. Sergei Udaltsov, head of the Left Front movement, was sentenced to six years in prison.
The charges are said to be based on an article Udaltsov published in support of another group of Russian activists charged with forming a terrorist organisation. Udaltsov has denied the allegations as politically motivated and, following the verdict, stated his intention to go on a hunger strike in protest.
Foreign Prisoner Case
The Kremlin has stated it is in contact with French authorities regarding the case of Laurent Vinatier, a French political scholar currently serving a three-year sentence in Russia and reportedly facing additional accusations of espionage.
An official stated that Russia has presented a proposal to France in the case of Vinatier, and now “it is in France’s court.” French President Emmanuel Macron’s office stated he is monitoring the situation, with all state resources working to provide consular support and push for his liberation at the earliest opportunity.
Symbolic Reconstruction in Mariupol
The Mariupol Drama Theatre, which was leveled in a 2022 Russian airstrike while many civilians sought refuge in its cellar, is scheduled to open its doors again. Authorities in control have promoted the reconstruction as a symbol of recovery.
However, previous staff from the theatre have denounced the reopening as “dancing on bones.” The reconstruction is part of a wider Kremlin effort to showcase its rule in occupied Ukraine, a process accompanied by the detention or expulsion of critics and confiscation of assets from local residents.
The theatre is expected to open by the month's end with a performance of a Russian fairytale, following its reconstruction almost from scratch over the last 24 months.
