New Year's Revelers Urged to Dress Warmly with Wintry Weather Expected Across the UK
Forecasters are reporting a chilly start to the new year, with snowfall likely over large parts of the UK. Those celebrating are advised to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Plans Proceed Amid Forecasts
The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay celebrations are planned to take place, following last year's postponement. This comes despite advisories for snow across northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," said the Met Office.
Celebrations Under Clear but Frosty Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and good visibility. Temperatures are due to be cold, making warm wraps a necessity, said forecasters.
Further north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to affect visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day
Heading into Friday, advisories are in place for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

- Disruptions and cancellations are anticipated on the transport network.
Readings Expected to Drop Further
With the start of 2026, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to batter the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Public Health Alerts Released
Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
