Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The Philippines was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced over a million residents.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system caused extensive sudden floods, storm surges, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million residents across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official explained. “A father also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed two fatalities: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another killed when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause an average of US$3.5 million in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president issued an emergency declaration last week due to the extensive devastation from the prior typhoon and the expected damage from the new storm.
