Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, there’s always an outcry to include of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay decades.
