The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Designing for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the visionary style architect behind many legendary styles associated with artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and performative fashion, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was the creator of the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show featured as its opener outfits on model Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his expert craftsmanship in designing sculptural silhouettes made him a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he commenced designing outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her American tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
- Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
- Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
- Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.
Design circles laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
