UK Set to Use Frozen Russian Assets to Fund Ukraine's Defense
The British government is prepared to move forward with employing the total value of frozen Russia's assets to support Ukraine's military campaign, PM Sir Keir Starmer has announced.
In a joint statement, the heads of state of the UK, the French Republic, and Germany asserted that this joint measure would escalate tension on Moscow's head Vladimir Putin and compel the Russian Federation to participate in talks.
They added that the move would be carried out in strong partnership with the United States.
British penalties have frozen more than £25bn of Russia's funds since Moscow began its widespread offensive against Ukraine in 2022. However, previously, funds allocated to Ukraine using Russia's holdings had exclusively been sourced from earnings and returns generated on them.
Sir Keir told Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky that the Britain, France, and the Federal Republic of Germany were aligned in their desire to push forward toward using the total worth of the immobilized Russia's state holdings to end the war.
He stated that further measures over the next period would apply more pressure on Russia.
This declaration follows European Union leaders gathered in Copenhagen previously to discuss utilizing immobilized Russian holdings for a €140 billion financial aid to the Ukrainian nation.
In the previous month, President Donald Trump urged G7 allies to confiscate or utilize seized Russian holdings, based on media sources.
The total of frozen Russian holdings in the Europe is estimated to be approximately €211bn.

The Russian government executed large-scale aerial attacks across Ukraine on Friday, resulting in power cuts in large parts of Kyiv, Kyiv, and multiple additional areas.
