Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to question specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
